How to Add AI to an n8n Workflow: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide
Introduction
Artificial intelligence becomes even more useful when it works together with automation. Instead of manually copying information, reading every message, and preparing summaries, you can build a workflow that uses AI to help process information automatically.
In our previous article, Build Your First n8n Workflow, we learned how to connect nodes, prepare data, and execute a workflow. Now we will take the next step: adding an AI model to an n8n workflow.
In this beginner-friendly tutorial, we will create a simple AI Text Summarizer that takes a long piece of text and produces a short summary. This project introduces the basic concepts behind AI-powered automation without requiring advanced programming skills.
What Does AI Add to an n8n Workflow?
n8n connects applications, processes information, and automates tasks. AI adds capabilities such as understanding language, summarizing text, classifying messages, and generating responses.
For example, a traditional workflow might collect a customer’s message and save it to a spreadsheet. An AI-powered workflow could also summarize the message and identify its main topic.
The basic process looks like this:
Input Text → AI Model → Summary
The input provides the information, the AI model processes it, and the workflow returns the result.
According to the official n8n documentation, n8n supports AI functionality alongside its workflow automation features. The exact setup depends on the AI model and nodes you choose.
What You Need Before Starting
Before building the workflow, make sure you have:
- Access to an n8n workspace, either through n8n Cloud or a self-hosted installation.
- A basic understanding of nodes and connections.
- Access to a supported AI model.
- The appropriate credentials for that model, if required.
For this tutorial, we will use a hosted AI model as an example. Many providers require an API key, and API usage may involve separate charges even if you already have a chatbot subscription. Check your provider’s pricing before proceeding.
If you do not have an API key yet, you can still read the steps and understand how the workflow works before connecting a service.
Step 1: Create a New Workflow
Open your n8n workspace and create a new workflow.
Give it a descriptive name, such as AI Text Summarizer.
We will begin with a manual trigger so you can run the workflow whenever you want to test it. Later, you can replace the manual trigger with an event such as a form submission or another supported trigger.
Step 2: Add a Manual Trigger
Add a Manual Trigger node to your workflow.
This node allows you to start the workflow yourself. It is useful for learning because you can test the process without connecting an external application.
Next, add an Edit Fields (Set) node and create a field named text.
For the value, enter a short paragraph about artificial intelligence, such as:
“Artificial intelligence helps computers perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Businesses and educators use AI tools to analyze information, generate content, and improve productivity.”
Connect the Manual Trigger to the Edit Fields node.
Your workflow now contains the text that you want the AI model to summarize.
Step 3: Add an AI Processing Node
The next step is to add a node that sends your text to an AI model.
Depending on your n8n version and chosen integration, you may use a Basic LLM Chain with a compatible chat-model node, or another supported AI node that suits the task.
For a simple summarization exercise, a chain-based setup is often easier to understand than a full AI agent.
Configure the AI processing step to receive the text from your previous node. You can usually reference incoming data using an n8n expression such as:
{{ $json.text }}
The expression tells n8n to use the value of the text field from the incoming item. Ensure that your field name matches exactly.
Step 4: Write a Clear AI Prompt
The prompt explains what you want the AI model to do.
For this example, use the following instruction:
“Summarize the text below in two or three simple sentences. Preserve the main ideas, use clear language, and do not introduce information that is not present in the original text.
Text to summarize:
[Insert the incoming text here]”
In your actual workflow, replace the placeholder with the expression that references the incoming text, such as {{ $json.text }}, in the appropriate prompt field.
A clear prompt makes the expected result easier to understand. You can experiment with different instructions, such as asking for three bullet points or a summary suitable for beginners.
Step 5: Connect Your AI Model
The AI processing node needs access to a compatible language model.
Select a supported model integration, such as an OpenAI Chat Model or another provider available in your n8n installation.
Follow the provider’s instructions to create the required credentials. Enter your API key through n8n’s credential system rather than placing the key directly in your prompt or workflow text.
Choose an available model and configure the connection. The precise options vary by provider, model, and n8n version.
If you receive a credential error, check that your key is correct, the provider account is active, and the account has the necessary access or usage balance.
Step 6: Run and Test the Workflow
Once the nodes and credentials are configured, execute the workflow.
Inspect the output of the AI processing node. You should see a shorter version of the original paragraph.
If the workflow fails, check the following:
- Is the text field populated?
- Does the expression reference the correct field name?
- Are the AI credentials configured correctly?
- Is the selected model available to your account?
- Has the provider returned a usage, access, or rate-limit error?
Try changing the input text and running the workflow again. Testing different examples will help you understand how the AI model responds to your instructions.
What Else Can You Automate With AI?
After learning text summarization, you can explore other useful projects.
Customer message classification: Use AI to identify whether an inquiry is about sales, support, or general information.
Content assistance: Turn long notes into short summaries or draft social media captions for human review.
Educational support: Summarize learning material or organize questions by topic.
Business productivity: Extract key points from non-sensitive text and prepare structured information for another workflow step.
These are examples rather than guaranteed outcomes. Each workflow needs suitable configuration, testing, and any required integrations.
Important Safety and Cost Considerations
AI-powered automation can process information quickly, but it can also produce incorrect results. Check summaries and other outputs before relying on them, particularly when the information is important or sensitive.
Avoid sending passwords, private customer information, or confidential documents to an AI provider unless you have confirmed that the service and your configuration meet the necessary privacy requirements.
Start with small tests, monitor API usage, and include human approval before important actions such as publishing content or sending consequential messages.
Conclusion
You have now learned the main stages of adding AI to an n8n workflow: preparing input data, creating a clear prompt, connecting a compatible AI model, and testing the output.
For beginners, this is an excellent next step after learning the fundamentals of nodes and workflow execution. For professionals, the same pattern can become part of a larger automation system that connects applications and processes information more efficiently.
At AI Success Academy, our goal is to make AI practical and accessible. Start with a small workflow, test it carefully, and gradually explore more advanced applications.
